Not everyone that is trying to rent a car has a credit card. So people without a credit card are left wondering, “can you get a rental car with a debit card?”
Most car rental companies will either do a credit check or turn you away if you only have a debit card. But luckily, there are some car rental companies that accept debit cards.
Whether you plan on using a one way car rental or a monthly car rental, doing research ahead of time will help you understand what to expect when using a debit card or cash.
If you’d prefer not to or can’t use a credit card, there are procedures that companies use to allow customers to rent a car with a debit card or cash. We’ll walk you through some of the most common stipulations.
There are very few car rental places that accept cash, so if you plan on using cash, you will more than likely have to pay upfront.
Since car rental agencies run a greater risk when customers are using debit cards, there is almost always a security deposit that’s needed. Make sure you have enough money to cover the payment and security deposit. This is typically at least a few hundred dollars. Most places will hold it for a few days, but depending on the bank the deposit might not come back into your account for several weeks.
Just because a car rental company accepts debit cards, doesn’t mean that they accept your debit card. Verify with the company to make sure that they accept your card. It shouldn’t be assumed that they do, and you definitely don’t want to waste all that time just to find out that they don’t accept your card.
Proof of Identity
Besides bringing a credit or debit card, you need to have a valid driver’s license with at least three years of driving experience.
